Mumbai Indians Women clinched the inaugural Women's Premier League title with a dominant 7-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals Women in the final at Brabourne Stadium on Monday.
Chasing a modest target of 114, Mumbai reached the victory mark with three balls to spare. Openers Charlotte Edwards and Yastika Bhatia played crucial knocks, scoring 34 and 35 runs, respectively.
The highlight of Mumbai's batting performance was Melie Kerr, who smashed an unbeaten 26 off just 12 deliveries. Her quickfire innings included three boundaries and a six, helping Mumbai accelerate the run chase in the latter stages.
Delhi Capitals Women, who batted first, struggled to build partnerships. Skipper Meg Lanning top-scored with 31, while Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 22. Mumbai's bowlers maintained discipline throughout the innings, led by England international Issy Wong who picked up two wickets.
In the end, it was Mumbai's all-round performance that proved too strong for Delhi. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was thrilled with the victory, saying, "It's an unbelievable feeling. The girls played outstandingly well throughout the tournament. We believed in ourselves, and we are proud to have won the first WPL title."
